A $249 Agent and a $99 Agent Have Identical Duties in New Jersey
Reliable registered agent coverage for New Jersey entities. Flat $99/year for the office address, same-day scanning of court papers, and reminders before state deadlines.
Disclosure before the argument: we sell the competing product. Registered Agent NJ.org holds a New Jersey street address, accepts service of process at it, and charges $99 a year for the privilege. LegalZoom's pricing here is theirs, taken from published rates in July 2026.
Credit Where It Is Owed
Most people searching for this service think of LegalZoom before they think of anyone else, and that recognition rests on something. Decades of business filings at national scale, explanatory material written for readers with no legal training, and a support organization large enough to answer the phone. An owner who wants one familiar vendor holding several unrelated matters at once is getting real value from the brand.
$249, Flat, and It Renews Itself
Registered agent service from LegalZoom lists at $249 a year. Our July 2026 pass found no introductory rate, no bundled discount, and no first-year concession anywhere. The subscription renews automatically until you tell it not to.
Give them this much: the price is at least honest about repeating. There is no teaser figure waiting to double on you. The number you see is the number that comes back.
The difficulty is what the number buys. Set against $99, LegalZoom costs $150 more per year for a role New Jersey defines in a single statutory sentence.
The Statute Does Not Read Brand Names
Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.
Order HereNew Jersey puts the requirement in N.J.S.A. 42:2C-14. An agent for service of process must be an individual residing in this state or another person with authority to transact business here, and the registered office has to be a New Jersey street address. The Treasury's filing instructions add that a company serving in the role should be registered and in good standing with the State Treasurer. A PO box is allowed in the record only as a companion to the street address, never as a substitute for it.
That is the job in full. Nothing in it scales with the vendor's advertising budget, and nothing in it gives a $249 agent an obligation a $99 agent lacks. When a process server walks up to the door, the statute asks whether somebody is there. It does not ask whose logo is on the invoice.
One correction to any cheapest-in-the-state reading of that: $90 is BetterLegal's published rate, so ours sits close to the low end rather than exactly at it.
The State Closed Its Own Mailbox
New Jersey did something unusual with the annual report, and it says a lot about how this state expects information to move. The report is online only. There is no paper form, no mailing address, no downloadable alternative. Every LLC files through the Treasury portal, pays $75 plus a small card or eCheck surcharge, and answers a mandatory workers' compensation section on the way through, including companies that carry no coverage and are not required to.
The due date is set by whichever month you formed in, landing at that month's end each year, and your opening report waits until the year after formation. Missing it draws no flat fine, which sounds gentle until you read the back half: two consecutive unfiled years and New Jersey can revoke the company outright.
So the state moved its half of the relationship entirely onto a screen, while the notices pushing you toward that screen still travel as paper into your registered office. That seam is where an agent either helps you or quietly costs you days. Anything served or delivered here is scanned before we close and sits in your account the same afternoon.
How a New Jersey LLC Drops LegalZoom as Its Agent
The mechanics are modest. New Jersey uses Form L-122 for an LLC changing its registered agent or registered office, the statutory fee is $25, and the filing goes to DORES, the Treasury division that keeps the business record. You can mail it with a check or submit the same change through the state's online amendments service. Our change of agent walkthrough lays out every field.
Order is the part worth insisting on. Get us appointed before the certificate goes in, not after you have closed the LegalZoom subscription. LegalZoom remains the agent of record until the state posts your change, and that overlap is precisely what keeps a lawsuit from arriving at an address nobody is answering for.
The Column on Our Side
Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.
Order Here$99 a year, and the renewal reads $99 as well. Our New Jersey address goes on the public filings so your home address does not. Service of process is scanned the day it arrives. Anything outside the legal and state categories can be forwarded too, at $15 a piece, a rate we publish instead of disclosing after the fact. There is one product in the cart and no menu after it.
The $150 a year you are not sending to a brand is yours to point somewhere useful.
